Competitive

If your athlete wants to continue developing their gymnastics skills after completing the Foundations Advanced training, they can opt to move across to one of our two competitive Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) programs, by going for either the fun, yet challenging Xcel Program with opportunity to participate in invitational meets and provincial championships or the high-calibre Development Program designed to help young gymnasts develop the strong skills they need to prepare for provincial, national and international competitions.

The Xcel and Development Programs are invitation-only, based on readiness and skill level. Participation in these programs is subject to on-going evaluation to make sure each athlete maintains the mental and physical abilities and skill sets that meet competitive standards. Participation in the competitive programs will also depend on attitude, personal progress and effort in all areas of training, as well as competitive performance.

Please use the Book Assessment option to register your child for a competitive gymnastics assessment in our self-serve customer portal. Alternatively, you can contact us at (403) 774-7322, or at info@kingymnastics.com.

At Kin Gymnastics we are proud to offer competitive Women's Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) for those who want to strive for more. The competitive season begins in September for Xcel athletes and is a ten-month commitment. The competitive season begins in July for Development athletes and is a full year round commitment.

Pre-Competitive

The Pre-Competitive Program may be where it all begins for a select few talented young hot shots. These young gymnasts will practice twice per week in order to prepare for competitive gymnastics. Dedication and discipline is a must, but your gymnast will have a blast learning and developing.

Xcel Program

The Xcel Program is an exciting competitive gymnastics program with a focus on having fun. Xcel athletes train a minimum of five hours per week and will primarily compete in Alberta to keep the program affordable, yet challenging at the same time. The girls will learn and compete all four WAG events (bars, beam, vault and floor), but unlike the Development Program, the athletes' skill levels for all four events do not need to be equal (you can be further ahead on one event versus another). In addition, the competitive format is less regimented and more fun-based as far as competition goes than is the case in the Development Program.

Development Program

The Development Program is for gymnasts who strive to master the skill sets required for the highest levels of achievement in Women’s Artistic Gymnastics. This Competitive Program focuses on the development of physical and mental strength of each athlete, in order to prepare and partake in competitive gymnastics that can take athletes from pre-competitive to provincial, national and even international competitive levels. As part of the Development Program, athletes learn how to challenge themselves within the supportive, positive coaching environment of a program that can go from six to more than 24 training hours per week. The program runs from level 1-10, with levels 1-5 being called the Compulsory Levels, whereas levels 6-10 are referred to as the Optional Levels (with Level 10 being equivalent to NCAA College Competitive Gymnastics).

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are Kin's admin hours?

We are availabe on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM; Friday from 2:00 PM - 8:00 PM; and Saturday from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM. We are closed on Wednesday, Sunday and statutory holidays.

  • How does Kin's competitive program work?
    • Acceptance into the competitive program is granted on the understanding that parents/guardians and athlete are making a one-year commitment to the club as our athlete selection, coaching contracts and budgets are based on a full year’s commitment from all participants.
    • Program fees are assessed each year and are based on a 10-month (Precomp and Xcel Programs) or 12-month (Development Program) training period.
    • Program fees vary based on each athlete’s training program and are split equally across monthly instalments, due on the 1st day of each month. Payment of the first month’s training fees will be required upon registration.
  • Are there make-up classes, credits or refunds for missed competitive classes?
    • Full refunds for any of our programs can be requested only prior to the athlete's starting date, but will be subject to a $25 administrative fee. Monthly tuition fees are non-refundable once the program has started.
    • Due to our strict athlete-to-coach ratio, missed competitive classes, including scheduled holidays, short-term illness or excused absences, will not result in make-up classes, prorated tuition, credits or refunds, since we are unable to offer that spot up to someone else once the competitve year has started.
    • There are no adjustments for missed training days due to competitions, holidays, illness or for other reasons.
    • Tuition charges will be prorated by exception only if a new athlete joins mid-program.
  • Can I cancel or get a refund for my competitive gymnastics program?
    • Acceptance into the competitive program is granted on the understanding that parents/guardians and athlete are making a one-year commitment to the club as our athlete selection, coaching contracts and budgets are based on a full year’s commitment from all participants. As such, we do not provide an option to pause or cancel the program once the athlete has started, since we are unable to offer that spot up to someone else once the competitve year has begun.
    • Likewise, no amendment to the training fee is available when an athlete is injured or sick. If a competitive athlete is injured or chronically ill during the competitive year, the athlete will be required to modify training until a doctor’s note is provided indicating approval to return to full training/conditioning. Serious injuries require a doctor's clearance to return to training. After injury recovery, three to four weeks minimum of healthy training of full skills and routines is required before competing. If the athlete returns and is training partial hours, regular monthly fees apply.
    • Full refunds for any of our programs can be requested only prior to the athlete's starting date, but will be subject to a $25 administrative fee. Monthly tuition fees are non-refundable once the program has started.

  • Are there any additional charges?
    • In addition to the monthly program fees, all athletes participating in recreational gymnastics must have a valid Kin Gymnastics membership. This is a mandatory annual membership, which includes a provincially mandated Alberta Gymnastics Federation (AGF) membership for all registered gymnasts at any registered Gymnastics facility in Canada.
    • The annual Kin Gymnastics membership is valid from July 1st – June 30th of each year. Kin Gymnastics membership fees cannot be pro-rated and are non-refundable once the athlete has started. Annual membership rates for competitive athletes are based on the level of gymnastics in which the athletes partake, ranging from developmental to provincial and national levels. Membership fees will be charged to your account prior to starting your first training class.
    • All competitive athletes will be required to purchase an official Kin tracksuit and competition leotard for their official competition meets.
    • Please budget for taking part in up to three meets per year at an average cost of $200-$250 each.
  • Do I have to participate in fund raisers or volunteer work?

Kin Gymnastics does NOT rely on parent support and therefore, fundraising is not required from anyone, but there is a strictly optional independent Kin Society parent group that does organize fundraising opportunities for anyone who wants to raise money for themselves to go towards program fees, travel costs, etc.

  • Are there discounts for enrolling multiple children or for enrolling in multiple classes?

A ten percent sibling discount will automatically apply to the lowest monthly program fees for families who register more than one child in either of our recreational or competitive programs, and also for those who register anyone for more than one class at a time.

  • What should my child wear for competitive gymnastics training?

Competitive gymnasts are required to train in a leotard with optional gym shorts. Please refer to the Kin Competitive Gymnastics Handbook for more details.
